Then a short car journey to Alison's house for an Area 17 social. Mel drove the 30 mins, so a good trun out for the City of London girlies. These are held once a quarter and are a chance for the cirles in our Area to get together. Cheese and wine with a bit of business thrown in was the order of the evening. Then a trip to East Croydon for the trip home. Lots of chat and fun, what more can a girl ask for!

Tuesday 10th January - Virtual Golf Social

Organiser: Heulwen
Another new experience for eight of us at the Virtual Golf near Piccadilly. Just a small sign, outside and office block, ring the bell, no voice and then downstairs, where a surprise awaits you. We were greeted and our coats taken, then we were shown to our booths and served drinks. A quick explanation of the principles (by a man, we were the only girlies there, apart from the staff) and away we go playing a golf course in Hawaii! Lots of giggling and wow factor as the swings get better. Down the fairway, in the rough, out of the sand, to the green and finally a put into the the hole, all in and hour, quite a journey. It was made all the more fun as we had three new members join us and we did not put them off. Finished off the evening at The Gallery Rendezvous on Beak Street for food, drinks and chatting! Hear Round Table now want to go! Have fun boys!

Held once a year, a formal dineer to remind us of why were are members of this wonderful association. a chance to catch up with friends and make new ones. Share experienes and generate fund raising ideas. There were about 40 Area 17 circlers past and present. Listening to one lady in her 80s and what fun and friendship she experience during her time in Circle and Tangent was facinationg. 2006 will be our 70th Anniversary year. Rhian gave a wonderful insight into her travels around the UK in the quest to promote our wonderful association and no the picture of her is not talking about her hair cut! We were fortunate to have a speaker from Cystic Fibrosis, Rhian's chosen charity for her presidential year. She is also a mother to a suffer and this along with the explanation of the disease brought many tears to the eyes. Thus we had a raffle and raised about £200 towards the cause.

Friday 28th September - Movie Night

Organiser: Marissa
Tessa and I went to see A Few Good Men starring the gorgeous Rob Lowe at the Theatre Royal Haymarket. Before the play we went for dinner at an Italian restaurant called Strada, where we had a very good class of red wine each. We had upper circle seats which were up in the rafters, but had a great view of the play . Unfortunately, my cardigan was stolen when the play was finished and I was devastated. :-( The staff advised me to leave my name and telephone number at the stage door. We went round the back of the theatre to the stage door, where all the actors were leaving. I managed to get Suranne Jones' (from Coronation Street) autograph and then Rob Lowe emerged looking irrestible. He stared at me, smiled and signed my autograph "To Marissa Love Rob Lowe", which made my whole evening.

Even though, it was a last minute change to a planned event and had my cardigan stolen, seeing Rob Lowe in the flesh and less than an arms length away from me, made all the difference.

Saturday 24th September - National President's visit to Area 17

Contact: Heulwen
What better way than to spend a Saturday night but dressing up for the National Preseident's Ball. The venue was The Metropole, NEC Birmingham.

This year's president Rhain is a a fun loving welsh lady and her them is "EWE CAN"!! so the evening's was laong the lines of SHEEP. Sheep balloons, sheep racing and lots of singing, dancing on the tables and a great live band. Gary Smith the Round Table Preseident was also one of the 400 or so present.

The menu - Spicy pranes and a fleecy noodle saled rammed with pineapple and pepers Pan fried loin of lamb with minted red sheep dip sauce Woolly creme brulee

My lasting memory has to be the circler who did YMCA with her Legs - a sight to be seen. I could not stop laughing for ages and have told the tale to many.

Tuesday 13th September - Anna-Sofie Wedding Wall Climbing

Organiser: Anna-Sofie
To celebrate my wedding the 14th May 2005 I invited everyone to come wall climbing with me in Mile End climbing center the 13th September. We had a low turnout but a very fun and different evening. Those who joined me were: Tessa, Bawani and Marissa. We met at app. 6.30 and got into our "gear". At 7 we starded warming up by climbing round a big wall and from then on it got wild as the pictures show.....

After climbing I incisted that we had my favourite english food: Fish & Chips and so we went down the road and ate in a lovely real greasy place. The fries were good and the fish huge - as the pictures tell.

Hmmm, looking at the picture, it seems there may have been quite a few toffees.

Annual Ball - 2nd July

Organiser:Round Table The Annual Ball was held on the HMS Belfast. Every one was dressed up in their best evening wear, but this didn't stop most of us from getting on the dance floor and doing our thang, or from gambling for play money (what's the point of that?). We all had a good evening and it flew by even though it went on to the shocking hour of 1:30am. Tut tut.

07 June - - Fashion Advisor

Organiser: Fiona Mathieson
Fashion advisor Fiona Mathieson takes us individually on a shopping session to find out what we should and shouldn't be wearing.

Friday 3 June - Somerset House

Organiser: Heulwen
Somerset House was the venue for a Friday night soiree entertaining our fellow circlers from Stockholm, Sweden. The local, area, national and international circling affords us such a large circle of friends. The six girls were in town on a shopping trip and break from the boys! We were booked for food and drink on the terrace but tru to form, the british weather let us down and it rained! Therefore, the manager rallied round and offered us a place in the Bar of The Admirality. It did not dampen the nattering and swapping of stories and experiences. We plan to visit them sometime in the future.

Wednesday 25 May - Pool evening at The Elbow Room

Organiser: Suzy Lock

Wednesday 25 May - Area 17 Handover

Organiser: Heulwen
Heulwen took the long and winding train journey out of the city to Epsom on this sunny spring evening. There were about forty or so ladies present, after the meal and raffle, Wallington and Carlshalton Ladies surprised Alison Dadswell our new Area Chairman with a song using the letters of her name to the memorable Sound of Music Tune of Do-Re-Mi. Past Chairman Kay Rowlands had travelled in from Paris just for the night! Busy lady! She has had a very busy year, work and circle wise. She was fortunate enough to also be the committee chair for the Annual South East Area Lunch held each March at the Lancaster Hotel. Her theme being Ascot, which is near her home. Always good to meet old and new friends alike and have lots of fun.

Tuesday 10 May - Visit to Cancer Research

Organiser: Heulwen
Ten of us were due to meet the Cancer Research UK, Race for Life Co-ordiantors at their Loncoln Inn Fields office for an update on the races that took place in 2004 and to let us know what was happening in 2005. We did meet but it was at the All Bar One on Kingsway as someone had double booked our room. So wine and tapas were enjoyed whilst we chatted away for a few hours and made our promoised for the summer 2005 races. The idea was for those of us who help each year, to meet the London Coordinators socially and for the newbes to have an insight into how they can and will make a differnce by organising at the races. We always help man the registerations desk - must be our super organisation and customer service skills - marshall the course, man the finishing line and tidy up and pack away at the end.

Tue 22nd February - Danish Dinner

Organiser: Anna-Sofie
An evening of Danish food, wine at Anna-Sofie's flat during which she told us her experiences in the Ladies Circle in Denmark, which is quite different to UK. . Anna-Sofie invited everyone home to her place in central London for an evening of Danish food, wine and story telling about how Danish Ladies Circle works, which is in a few aspects different to how we do it here in London. There were seven Of us and we enjoyed open sandwiches on bread that can best be described as rye-bread, with different Danish specialties for toppings such as salmon, meat balls, pate, and danish cheese. As to the wine we had Pingus 2001 wine which is from Spain but made by a Danish guy. We had a great girlie evening and Heulwen lead us into the discussion of how to arrange a surprise for RT. That was after Heulwen had drunk a whole bottle of white wine by herself! She liked it. :o)

Area 17 – South East Area Luncheon - Sat 12th March

Organiser: Kay Rowlands SEAL was in the Royal Lancaster Hotel on the 12th of March and it was the first time for Helen, Gaynor and myself at this event. The expert Vicki was on hand to answer any questions that we might have. It is a great occasion to dress up for and there were lots of ladies from different circles wearing formal attire with huge hats. The National President attended. In the hall there were various stalls selling jewellery, recipes, and clothes from various charities. We were called in for dinner by the Toast Master, the tables were decorated in green and the theme was horses. We had a goody bag each which was filled with magazines, toilettries and chocolates. We had a three course meal and met ladies from other circles who were on our table. We had to stand up during the toast where the toast applied to us.

This was also the place where I met Tessa who has now transfered from her circle (in Sevenoaks as it was closing) to our circle. There was a guest speaker called Rachel Elnough who got the idea for a business offering special gifts for special occasions. The company was called Red Letters Day. It was a good speech and she was applauded well by all. After the food, we went upstairs to the bar for a last night drink. Then onto Maggie's (who is an honourary) place where we had a few drinks and left feeling very merry. ;-)

Round Table Challenge “The Female of the Species” - Tue 29th March

Contact: Vicki
The scariest event in the diary was the Round Table challenge "Female of the species". Picture the scene, you are in a pub with a group of Round tablers, there is a gentleman at the front with two large cool boxes. The circlers - Vicki, Pam (a permantely invited guest) and myself are the only females in the room. The gentleman talks of how women have evolved in the workplace and suddenly we are represented by cockroaches the size of your hand, we were warned that if it flies towards you not to swot it. I thought would I really have that sort of self control.... :-( No way!! There were stick insects the size of your arm, a snake with a black and orange pattern and was smooth and yet not slimey to the touch, snails the size of a telephone, a frog that could grow to be the size of a small child's head, a millipede and a tarantula which caused me to run to the other side of the room. We were allowed to touch all the insects, I chose not to touch the tarantula...... .

Held at the Royal Lancaster Gate Hotel we all dressed up in our evening gowns and played hostess to the many men and woman who came to support this charity event.
